Canadian Boats

We recently had a Canadian boat listed for sale in Canadian dollars.  The Boats For Sale page only lists prices in US dollars.  The listing owner provided some interesting information about exchange rates between the US and Canada and gave some information about US citizens buying a boat in Canada, then bringing it into the US.  Here are his thoughts.

"Unfortunately for me the C$ has appreciated vs. the US$ by 25% since I bought the boat. This adds 25% to the normal depreciation that I have already suffered: it and all similar boats are built in the US or priced in US $$$$.  That means that new boats like mine are now 25%
less than they were when I bought mine.  That of course affects resale prices.  By the time I sell the boat I suspect that the Can.$ will cost US$0.85.  Currently it is US$0.83.  If I sell
in US$$$$ each 1 cent rise in the Canadian dollar “costs” me C$3,500!  OUCH!

"Although I have no personal experience I do not believe that there are too many problems
buying a Canadian registered boat & taking it back to the States.  When the C$ was worth
US$0.62 Canadian boats were selling like “Hot Cakes”.

"I know that if a Canadian buys my boat with out using a broker or a dealer they “only” have to pay 8% provincial sales tax (PST) in Ontario. Other Provinces have higher “PST” rates.  Alberta has no PST.  They have lots of oil though!  If a Canadian buys a boat through a broker or from outside the country they would have to pay PST & a 7% (Federal) goods & services tax (GST).

"This at least gives me an advantage in price against the US boats like mine that are for sale. The average price for a 396 like mine on Yacht World is US$270,000.  Most all of them are “salties”.  That gives me 10% advantage.  The GST another 7%."

Best Places to Retire

Every now and then, Patsy and I think about selling everything, moving to a slightly bigger boat, and running away. The question we haven't answered is where to run to?  We've been researching the best places for the past month and ended up with more questions than answers.  For example, do you have to be a resident of a state?  This is a big deal when you consider taxes.  Do you actually have to live somewhere to be a resident?  Alaska has the best tax rates, but the winter weather is not great for boating.

I would appreciate your thoughts on where you would like to retire to boat and what influences your decision.

Contact Information for Parts

Last month, I mentioned that McDaniel Yacht Basin is a source for spare parts.  I omitted their phone number.  It is 410-287-8121.

Requests for Passwords

It is never a problem to look up your password.  I keep hoping that I will eventually have an automated means to provide the password to you.

Occasionally, I receive a request for a password from someone I cannot identify by email, name, telephone number, or address.  I send the request for passwords to the email address we have on file if it is different from the requesting email address.

Famous Member??

One of our members recently auditioned for and was accepted as a contestant on "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire", the syndicated game show.  The member reminded me that being accepted as a contestant and actually appearing on the show are two distinctly different things.  If he makes it onto the show, he promises to let me know when the show will be broadcast.

Upcoming Events

The Club is beginning to plan events for next year.  Last month I mentioned something about finding additional crew members and received NO responses.  Not even the original member asking about other crew members responded.  I have to assume that this is not a good idea.

Saturday Night Out.(SNO)  We had good success with the Saturday Night Out during the summer.  We’d like to expand this to more areas.  Saturday Night Out is where members and owners who may be interested in becoming members meet at a restaurant on Saturday night and have dinner.  One member coordinates the restaurant.  People attending pay for their own dinner and drinks.  In the summer or in nice weather, we usually cruise in.  The Club’s goal is to have a member “host” one month a year in an area.

The Club received the following suggestions for SNO's:

  • Doug's Restaurant, west Catalina Island, California
  • Dave and Busters, Philadelphia
  • MacGregor's, Havre de Grace, Maryland
  • Mike's Restaurant, South River Maryland

We are still looking for dates and places in the New York City and Chicago areas.  Let me know what you think.

Rendezvous.  We received several suggestions for possible marinas in the Tidewater Virginia area that we are looking into.  Again, any ideas are greatly appreciated.

The New Web Site

The new web site continues to evolve with some problems still cropping up.  I think that most of the problems are solved now, which only means that I haven't found too many mistakes lately.

If you encounter any problems with the web site, please drop me a note or call.  It is very hard for me to test the web site, because I know how it's supposed to work and it almost always works for me.  Thank you.

Gift Ideas

With the holidays coming up, you may be interested in some nautical themed jewelry.  Check out Jewelry By Design at http://www.virtik.com for some unique ideas in most price ranges.
