Great Loop Update

The Loop Trip has been going well. We have had company on board for all of the trip and that has made it even more exciting. Being able to share such an adventure is special. It is a trip out of National Geographic and we are doing it....... To say the least, my captain Walter, has been in hog heaven the entire time.

The Perfect Boat

Earlier this summer, I asked for which features your perfect boat should have.  I received several excellent suggestions, including one from a Carver competitor suggesting that one of my requirements should be his brand. Here are some other suggestions. Don Wilson reminded me to get bow thrusters. Ted and Jan Cooper from Canada - Auto Pilot and the Ice maker (and of course TONS of batteries and a REALLY big inverter/charger).... everything else is expendable.... except of course my wife Jan..... someone has to jump onto the dock and tie us up while I'm up driving the boat :-) ..  Don't forget the underwater transom lights (which explain lots of batteries) ... And my absolute favorite from Eileen Law - My "perfect boat" would be one equipped with a Margarita Machine. It's such a pain in the neck to get your dirty, greasy fingers all over a nice tall margarita glass that you reach for while you are checking your oil in the bilge, for instance, let alone reaching for ice cubes only to taint them with the grease from your soiled fingers. Of course, after a couple of the Margaritas I concoct, one gets used to the taste of oil-tainted ice cubes and it really doesn't matter after the second one. Any germs that exist are quickly destroyed by the alcohol. I COULD solve the problem by drinking out of paper cups and then throwing them away, but who likes to drink out of paper cups??? Another nice feature would be a boat that comes equipped with a "Cabana Boy" -- preferably one who can't talk--just take commands. When they come out with these features, kindly inform me so that I may be the first one on my dock to buy one.

Eileen, marry the Cabana Boy. That'll shut him up.

Finding Parts

Doing your own repairs on the boat may be either recreational or necessary.  Several sick, demented people actually enjoy doing their own repairs.  The major problem is finding the correct #@%**&@$ parts.  The web sites are, for the most part, terrible.  Trying to find parts that are specifically Carver related is even worse because of dealer turnover.  Here are a couple of suggestions.  McDaniel Yacht Basin in North East Maryland (phone 410-287-8121 - ask for Paula) has been a Carver dealer for many years and is a great resource for Carver only kind of stuff.  Jackson Marine Sales, also in North East (phone 410-287-9400 ask for parts), is a very good source of mechanical parts and Perko stuff.  They even had my fuel filler cap o-rings in stock.

Relaxing on the Boat

I received this note from Russ Hepworth. Here I sit on my Boat in the Beautiful Old town area of Tacoma, Washington, logged onto the internet with a wireless highspeed server reading the latest newsletter while enjoying a glass of good wine. What could be better.? My reply. Well, Russ, you didn't mention sex. His response. That's a given. Make up your own joke here.

Cleon's Cleaning Tips

If you've ever waxed your boat and been frustrated by not being able to remove all the wax or having to spend most of your waxing time removing the wax by hand, Cleon has a new tip.  Put corn starch onto the buffing pad to help remove the wax and add to the shine.

Dave's Silly Tip of the Month

Shock your fresh water holding tanks by adding a tiny amount of chlorine bleach to the water.  Make sure you flush the holding tank thoroughly after shocking the tank.

Volvo Penta Recall

I've contacted Volvo for more information about the pending recall and they've not responded.  If you have a Volvo Penta diesel engine and have not received a recall notice, you may want to contact your dealer to see if your engine is included in the recall.

New Web Features

A series of recent disasters caused a member to ask if we could keep, in a secure location, insurance and documentation information for his boat.  By keeping this information on-line, he could pull up his boat's registration, documentation, and insurance policy information as soon as he could get to the Internet.  Effective immediately, we are making this available.  Email us a scanned copy of your boat's registration, documentation, and insurance forms.  You may also want to include your insurance agency's telephone number and your insurance carrier's claims toll-free number.  If you do not have the ability to scan your documents, photocopy them and mail to Carver Owners Club; 2207 Concord Pike, Suite 412; Wilmington, DE 19803.

Upcoming Events

2006 is shaping up to be an active year for the Club.  Here is the list of activities we currently have planned:

  • February - New York City Saturday Night Out hosted by Diane and Joe Lipowski
  • February - Oxford, PA Saturday Night Out hosted by Scott Gundaker
  • March - Wilmington, DE Saturday Night Out (this may be held at a member's home, a departure from our usual practice) hosted by Sarah and Gary Willoughby
  • April - Upper Chesapeake Bay Saturday Night Out at Harbor House
  • June - Sixth Annual Chesapeake Bay Rendezvous, site TBD
  • June - Second Annual Chesapeake Bay Cruise
  • TBD - Cruise/Rendezvous at Cape May

We are also planning a "Skill Building" weekend with a boating safety organization.  We'll cover some basic, practical skills, such as anchoring and rafting together.  If you have suggestions for additional skills, please send them along.  As Patsy and I settle into Florida a bit, we also plan to have a Saturday Night Out in January and, possibly, a Rendezvous in late February.

Selling Stuff on the Club Website

Boats for Sale and the Accessories Marketplace are very popular, both for buyers and for sellers.  Items on the Accessories Marketplace especially seem to sell quickly.  Now is a great time to list your seldom used items for sale.

If you list an item for sale in Boats for Sale or in the Accessories Marketplace, keep your contact information current.  Several potential buyers contacted me in the last month because they attempted to contact the seller and never got a response.  If you sell an item or just decide that you don't want to list it anymore, send me a note and I'll remove it.  If you fail to respond to a potential buyer, your listing will be removed.
