| What Is It?? New Puzzle We have a new puzzle about what something is. A member who will remain nameless until after this issue goes out, it making something many members may be interested in. Not too many clues from me on this one - I know what it is supposed to be and I'm not telling.

| Aluminum2000
Several of the Carver boat models in the late 90's have problems with paint blistering. That is, the finish bubbles up, making windows hard to open or close and making the boat look terrible. One way to fix this problem is to remove the windows, sand the paint down to bare metal and powder coat the finish. Another way is to replace the windows. Aluminum2000 is the company that makes windows, windshields, door, and other aluminum products for Carver boats. Just a quick note, they did not make the windows that blister - that company is doing other things now. For a more detailed look at Aluminum 2000, see our featured article by clicking here.

| Cleon's Cleaning Tips
If you're still using a bucket of water with soap to clean your boat, you may want to consider using a Mr. Clean AutoDry Pro-series washing system, about $40 for the starter kit. The Mr. Clean system recommends that you wet the boat, spray on the soap, brush, rinse off, and, then, rinse with de-ionized water. The results are brilliant - no more water spots, no more hauling the water buckets around. The Mr. Clean system isn't perfect. You have to buy the special soap and the filters (that wear out far too often) and it isn't cheap. The soap will leak out of the washer thingy if you lay it down the wrong way. The water pressure coming out of the de-ionized filter isn't great. You have to find a way to rinse out your brushes, sponges, and cleaning cloths without using a bucket. Proctor and Gamble, makers of the Mr. Clean Auto-Dry system, suggest that you rinse your cleaning materials using the standard rinse cycle and I found that awkward. Not having to dry the boat and avoiding water spots somehow made it all seem worthwhile.

| Ozone Generators
The club purchased an ozone generator and is offering a limited number of fractional ownership options. That's right, you can buy a time share vacation on an ozone generator. Let me know if you are interested in buying a share.

| Dave's Silly Tips Got a note from a mail-only member who was complaining about how difficult it was to shift his transmissions on his V-drive. He told me that his mechanic told him that's how things are - live with it. Several of us have run into this problem from time to time. I've found that the best way to treat it is to spray the linkage on the transmission with a waterproof lubricant, like BOESHIELD T-9. I haven't heard back from him. He was impressed that such a stupid solution might work. When I first ran into this problem, I lubricated the shifter cable using graphite and it didn't work. When someone showed me the simple solution, I hated everybody for a day. Got an email from a member complaining of a strong sulfur smell coming from only one faucet on his boat. Here's the solution.
Most
likely, the sulfur smell is caused by a relatively harmless bacteria in
the pipes. Why in just one spigot? Because the bacteria tend to live
in rust. Relatively harmless - well they can cause some intestinal
distress in people with weakened immune systems.
You can
kill the bacteria by shocking the water supply with tiny amounts of
chlorine bleach. In an earlier newsletter, I mentioned how to do that.
You may also want to use a house hold water filter for both shore water
and to fill the holding tank. Some bacteria will come from ground
water, but that would affect all your spigots.
The member replaced the faucet and killed a year old problem. The bacteria mentioned can live in ground water and it may be especially bad early in the boating season as the pipes at the marina get flushed out. From another member, "In the recent news letter one of the owners mentioned holding tank odor....Something I have found that helps is to pouring about a half cup of mineral oil in the head and flushing..... this creates an oil film on the top of the tank contents and creates a seal. In addition the mineral oil lubricates all the moving parts in the head...." Let me know if you try this. Let me know how well it works.
